Tastefully Timed: Your Culinary Guide for Every Occasion

Hi, Weldon! We're Emily and Gerald, both third-year law students from Ontario. Our mutual love for food brought us together. During our first year, we ended up in the same section and small group, and we made it our mission to explore Halifax's dining scene.

Over the past three years, we've visited and ranked restaurants across all of Halifax – posting countless photos and often getting requests from classmates for recommendations. Although law school kept us busy, making a dedicated food Instagram or TikTok difficult, we're excited to share our top picks and tips for life's special moments right here in the Weldon Times. Stay tuned for tasty adventures!

This first issue is tailored towards 1Ls who are new to the Halifax area. Upper years, stay tuned for the next issue where we’ll dive deeper into our favourite lesser-known spots!

Parent-Powered Feast: Your First Halifax Dining Experience

Emily: Edna - 2053 Gottingen Street

This North End Halifax restaurant boasts a seasonal menu featuring bistro-style dishes and local ingredients. Sharing dishes family-style is a must here. I always go for one or two of their appetizers, their rotating scallop dish, and pasta. Don’t miss their sticky toffee pudding with local ice cream from Dee Dee’s Ice Cream to wrap up your meal.

Bicycle Thief - 1475 Lower Water Street: Gerald

This classic Halifax restaurant serves up fresh pasta and seafood. Grab a patio seat on a sunny day to enjoy the harbourfront. A favorite of mine is the Linguine all’Aragosta, which comes in a tomato-based sauce with lobster, and the short rib that truly falls off the bone. I love to sip a Hugo Spritz and people-watch from the patio.

Food Adventures with Friends: Kicking Off Your Halifax Journey

Emily: Shuck Seafood + Raw Bar’s Happy Hour - 5120 Salter Street

I never liked oysters until I moved to the East Coast and tried them here. Shuck’s offers a daily happy hour from 4 PM to 6 PM where their oysters are just $1.50 each. If you’re new to oysters, Beausoleil and Raspberry Point oysters are two great, safe East Coast picks.

Bliss Caffeine Bar - 1451 South Park Street: Gerald

Close to campus, this place is always bustling. Whether you’re there for a quick coffee and pastry or a sit-down meal, you won’t be disappointed. My favourites are the fried chicken sandwich (don’t forget to add potatoes!) and the smoothie bowl topped with fresh fruit.

Coastal Journey: A Trip to Peggy’s Cove

Emily: Shaw’s Landing - 6958 Peggy’s Cove Road, West Dover

This casual restaurant nestled in a lobster fishing community offers all the seafood classics you could want. Their fish and chips come in generous portions. If you’re like me and prefer a lighter option to save room for dessert, try their pan-fried haddock.

Rhubarb - 8650 Peggy’s Cove Road, Indian Harbour: Gerald

Just past Peggy’s Cove, this cozy spot serves crisp pizzas with unique flavor combinations, as well as a variety of fresh seafood. Their lobster roll is a crowd favorite that you shouldn’t miss.

Late-Night Cravings: Post-Domus Eats

Emily: Alexandra’s Pizza - 1735 Grafton Street

Alexandra’s arguably has better music than most Domus events, and they offer $5 rail shots if you want to keep the night going. I’m usually there for their poutine selection, especially the donair poutine or chicken poutine, which features a cut-up chicken burger with gravy and cheese.

Willy’s - Pizza Corner, 5239 Blowers Street: Gerald

Willy’s is the busiest spot near Argyle Street, famous for their burgers and poutine and open until 4 AM – so you’ll never go hungry. My personal favourite is their pulled pork poutine with a Diet Coke. If the Willy’s line is too long, head over to Sicilian Pizza for a donair slice to hit the spot.
